From first inquiry to signed agreement
Quick answer
Franchise sales support is building and running the process that turns franchise inquiries into signed agreements with the right owners: candidate qualification, a CRM pipeline, compliant FDD delivery and receipts, validation calls with existing franchisees, a discovery day and clear approval criteria. It follows the FTC Franchise Rule, including the 14-day waiting period.
Reviewed October 20, 2026 by the Fransion franchise development team
Every franchise you award is a ten-year relationship. The wrong owner costs far more than an empty territory: weak results, support time, unhappy validation calls and, sometimes, legal disputes.
A good franchise sales process is designed to say no as often as it says yes. It qualifies candidates on capital, experience and fit early, keeps every conversation within what your FDD allows, and gives serious candidates the information they need to make a confident decision.
Fransion designs and supports that process: the stages, scripts, CRM, compliance checkpoints and approval criteria. We work alongside your team, and our in-house marketing fills the top of the funnel.
Our process
Most candidates move from first inquiry to signing in one to four months, depending on financing and how quickly they complete each stage.

Deliverable: Approval checklist and signed agreement
Candidate fit
Strong systems are built by approving the right people, not the most people. These are the six criteria we help you score.
01
Enough liquid capital and net worth to fund the full initial investment plus working capital, with room for a slow start.
02
Management, sales or industry experience that maps to the skills your best operators share.
03
People who will follow the system, represent the brand well and work constructively with you.
04
A realistic plan for running the business, whether as an owner-operator or with a strong manager.
05
Roots in the territory help with hiring, networking and local marketing.
06
Willingness to learn your way of doing things, even when they have done it differently before.

Reference
Each stage has a goal for you and the candidate, and a rule to respect before moving on.
| Stage | Goal | Compliance checkpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Inquiry | Respond quickly and confirm basic fit | Advertising follows registration status in the candidate’s state |
| Qualification | Confirm capital, timeline and territory | No earnings claims outside Item 19 |
| FDD delivery | Give the candidate the full disclosure | Signed receipt; 14 calendar days before signing or payment |
| Validation | Let candidates hear from current owners | Franchisees speak freely; no scripted earnings figures |
| Discovery day | Mutual decision on fit | Same disclosure rules apply in person |
| Agreement | Final terms and territory | Unilateral material changes need 7 days before signing |
| Signing | Award the franchise | Waiting periods met and approval documented |

Avoid these
Each one is common, and each one is preventable with a clear process.
1
Sharing sales or profit figures that are not in Item 19, even casually, creates legal exposure.
2
Taking a deposit or signature before the 14-day period ends can make the sale voidable.
3
Awarding territories to under-capitalized or poorly matched candidates creates weak units and hard validation calls.
4
Candidates who wait days for a reply move on to other brands.
5
Franchisees who are surprised by calls give rushed, unhelpful answers.
Lead sources
Many franchisors use both. Here is how they differ.
| Two ways to find candidates | Direct recruitment marketing Your brand, your campaigns, your pipeline | Franchise broker networks Third parties introduce candidates |
|---|---|---|
| How candidates arrive | Your website, search, social and portals | Introduced by a broker |
| Cost model | Marketing spend you control | Commission when a franchise is awarded |
| Control of the message | Full | Shared with the broker |
| State rules | Advertising follows registration status | Some states also require brokers to register |
| Builds your brand | Yes, every campaign adds visibility | Limited |
| Best fit when | You want a long-term pipeline you own | You need introductions fast in new markets |

Franchise law
Under the FTC Franchise Rule, candidates must receive your FDD at least 14 calendar days before they sign or pay. If you unilaterally make material changes to the franchise agreement, they must have the final form at least 7 calendar days before signing. Financial performance claims may only be made if they are included in Item 19.
Registration states add rules: you cannot offer franchises there until registration is effective, and several states regulate franchise advertising and require franchise brokers or sellers to register.

FAQs
Still have a question? Ask a franchise development specialist, free and confidential.
Qualified candidates meet your leadership team, see operations and training, review their territory and plan, and ask their final questions. It is a mutual decision about fit, not a sales event.
By scoring each candidate on liquid capital and net worth against Item 7, relevant experience, timeline, territory and fit with your values, before your team invests significant time.
Commonly one to four months from first inquiry to signing. The 14-day FDD waiting period, validation calls, financing and discovery day all affect the timeline.
Only if that information is included in Item 19 of your FDD, with a reasonable basis. Otherwise, earnings claims are not allowed.
Brokers can add introductions quickly, for a commission when a franchise is awarded. Direct recruitment marketing builds a pipeline and brand you own. Many franchisors use both.
Calls candidates make to existing franchisees listed in Item 20 of your FDD to hear about their real experience. They are one of the strongest factors in a candidate’s decision.
We design and support your franchise sales process and run the recruitment marketing in-house. Franchise sales services are delivered with specialist partners where needed, and you make every approval decision.
Any CRM that tracks stages, FDD delivery dates and receipts, and source reporting will work. We set up and configure the one that fits your team.
